Thermacell verwendet eine effektive Technologie, die auch in der Natur vorkommt. Durch die Erhitzung der Plättchen gibt das Gerät D-Allethrin ab. Hierbei handelt es sich um einen synthetischen Nachbau einer Schutzsubstanz, die bei Chrysanthemen vorkommt. Im Radius von etwa 20 Quadratmetern um das Gerät baut sich eine Schutzzone auf, die bis zu 98% aller Stechmücken fernhält.
